Progress with Purpose: Thunder’s Transition to NIHL 2
Thunder will move to NIHL 2 South Wilkinson Division for the 2025/26 season.
The club has made the decision to move into NIHL 2 South for the 2025/26 season, reflecting a clear commitment to the development of young, local talent. We believe this step offers the ideal platform for our players to grow into confident, capable senior athletes while competing in a league that better supports their stage of development.
Our long-term vision remains unchanged: to build a team made up of players who have progressed through the full Milton Keynes pathway. By keeping this group together and developing as a unit, we aim to return to the higher divisions stronger, more prepared, and ready to compete for silverware. We are laying the foundations for a sustainable, community-focused club that becomes a recognised hub for developing hockey talent.
Despite the challenges of competing in NIHL 1—where financial disparity made it difficult to match the depth and experience of other teams—we are proud of what we achieved this season. Our roster featured:
- 11 players developed entirely through the MK junior system
- 7 players dual-registered with and still playing for MK Storm U19s
- 15 U20s, including 4 still active at U18 level outside MK
- Several U16 prospects training regularly with the senior team, with 3 eligible to debut in 2025/26
While we were competitive and the development gains were invaluable, the limited opportunity to manage games in such a demanding league often cost us points. By stepping into Division 2, we gain a more balanced, competitive schedule—offering the chance for this young group to experience success and stability without compromising our development-first approach.
We believe this move is the right one—not just for now, but for the long-term future of Milton Keynes Thunder.
